About this tool

A sitemap lists the pages you want search engines to discover. It does not guarantee indexing, but it helps new sites and pages with few links get found faster. Upload sitemap.xml to your site root, add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt, and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Google ignores changefreq and priority, so they are optional here. An accurate lastmod date is the hint Google does use. Each sitemap file can hold 50,000 URLs; larger lists are split automatically.

Good to know

  • Does not crawl your site; you supply the URL list.
  • All URLs should be on the same domain as the sitemap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I submit a sitemap to Google?

In Google Search Console, open Sitemaps, enter sitemap.xml and select Submit.

Do changefreq and priority matter?

Google has said it ignores them. Keep lastmod accurate instead.

Which pages should be in the sitemap?

Only canonical pages you want in search results. Leave out redirects, noindex pages, duplicates and private pages.
