Key takeaways

  • A wa.me link opens a WhatsApp chat with your number in one tap, with an optional pre-filled message.
  • Use the full international number without +, spaces or leading zeros.
  • Place the link in your social bios, website, Google Business Profile, emails and on printed QR codes.
  • Only message people who contacted you or opted in; unsolicited bulk messages can get a number banned.

How click-to-chat works

WhatsApp supports links in the form https://wa.me/971501234567. When someone opens the link on a phone, WhatsApp starts a chat with that number without them having to save it as a contact. On a computer, it opens WhatsApp Desktop or WhatsApp Web. Adding ?text= with an encoded message fills in the first message, which the customer can edit before sending.

Formatting the number

Use the full international format: country code then number, digits only. A UAE mobile written locally as 050 123 4567 becomes 971501234567 (drop the leading 0, no + sign). The WhatsApp link generator cleans this up automatically.

  • Instagram, TikTok and Facebook bios, and in Instagram story link stickers.
  • Your website: a "Chat on WhatsApp" button on contact and product pages (the generator gives you ready HTML).
  • Google Business Profile, so people who find you on Maps can message you.
  • Email signatures and invoices.
  • Print: a QR code on menus, flyers, packaging, shop windows and business cards.

Write a helpful pre-filled message

A short, specific message tells you where the lead came from and saves the customer typing: "Hi, I saw your menu on Instagram and would like to book a table." Use different messages for different channels to see which bring the most chats. For website clicks, you can also track the button in your analytics with a UTM-tagged landing page.

Rules and etiquette

  • Reply quickly; use WhatsApp Business greeting and away messages for out-of-hours chats.
  • Only send promotional messages to people who have agreed to receive them. WhatsApp's Business Policy prohibits unsolicited bulk messaging and may restrict or ban numbers that receive many blocks or reports.
  • Respect privacy laws, such as the UAE Personal Data Protection Law, when storing customer chats and numbers.
