About this tool

UTM parameters are labels appended to a link. When someone clicks it, Google Analytics (and most other tools) records where they came from: source is the site or platform (facebook, newsletter), medium is the type of channel (social, email, cpc), and campaign names the promotion. Term and content are optional, used to tell keywords or ad versions apart.

Keep a consistent naming convention, all lowercase, because analytics treats "Facebook" and "facebook" as different sources. Do not add UTM tags to links within your own website; that overwrites the visitor's original source.

Good to know

  • Works with any analytics tool that reads standard UTM parameters.
  • Existing UTM tags on the URL are replaced.

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

Tags added to a URL (such as ?utm_source=facebook) that tell analytics tools where a visit came from.

Which UTM fields are required?

Source, medium and campaign. Term, content and ID are optional.

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

No, as long as your pages have canonical tags pointing to the clean URL, which most sites (including this one) do.
