About this tool
A hash function turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint; changing one byte changes the whole hash. Software publishers list SHA-256 checksums so you can confirm the file you downloaded is exactly theirs. Paste the published value into "Compare" and the tool tells you which algorithm matches.
SHA-256 and SHA-512 are computed with your browser's built-in Web Crypto. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes and should only be used for non-security checksums or legacy systems. Never use plain hashes to store passwords; use bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 on your server.
