About this tool

Version 4 UUIDs contain 122 random bits; the chance of two ever colliding is negligible. Version 7 (standardised in RFC 9562) starts with a millisecond timestamp, so new IDs sort after older ones. That keeps database indexes compact and is the better choice for primary keys in most new systems. Microsoft calls UUIDs GUIDs; the format is the same.

Good to know

  • Up to 1,000 per batch.
  • v7 UUIDs reveal roughly when they were created.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use UUID v4 or v7?

Use v7 for database keys (time-ordered, index-friendly) and v4 when the ID should reveal nothing about creation time.

Are these UUIDs truly unique?

They are generated with crypto.getRandomValues, a cryptographically secure source, so duplicates are practically impossible.

What is the difference between a UUID and a GUID?

None in practice. GUID is Microsoft's name for the same 128-bit identifier.
