Key takeaways
- "Rotate view" in a PDF reader only changes your screen; you have to save a rotated copy for others to see it.
- PDF pages rotate in steps of 90 degrees, and rotating does not reduce quality.
- Rotate single pages when a scan mixes portrait and landscape sheets.
- Text inside a rotated scan is still an image; run text recognition separately if you need to search it.

Rotate and save in three steps
- Open Rotate PDF and choose the file.
- Use Rotate all, or the buttons under individual page previews to turn only those pages.
- Download the new PDF. Everyone who opens it will see the pages the right way up.
The file is processed inside your browser, so scans of contracts, IDs or medical letters stay on your device.
Why the rotation "did not stick"
Most PDF readers, including web browsers, have a rotate button in the toolbar. That only turns the page on your screen for this session. When you close the file or send it on, it opens sideways again. A permanent change means saving a new copy with the page rotation stored in the file, which is what a rotate tool does.
How rotation works inside a PDF
Each PDF page has a rotation setting of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Rotating changes that setting; the text, images and vector drawings themselves are untouched. That is why rotating is instant, keeps the file size almost the same and never reduces quality, even for high-resolution scans.
Common situations
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| The whole scan came out sideways | Rotate all pages 90° in one go |
| One landscape table in a portrait report | Rotate just that page |
| Every second page is upside down (double-sided scan) | Turn each of those pages 180° with the buttons under its preview |
| Pages are also in the wrong order | Use Organize PDF to rotate, reorder and delete in one place |
| You need to combine several scans first | Merge them, then rotate the pages that need it |
On a Mac
Preview can rotate pages: show the thumbnails, select the pages, use the rotate button, then save. The browser tool works the same way on Windows, Android, iPhone and anything else, with no software to install.
Things rotation does not change
- Text in scans. A scanned page is a picture of text. Rotating makes it readable, but to search or copy the words you need text recognition, such as our image to text tool for single pages.
- Digital signatures. Any change to a signed PDF, including rotation, invalidates the signature. Rotate first, then sign.
- Page size. An A4 page turned 90° becomes A4 landscape; it is not scaled or cropped.
