How to use it

About this tool

What a resume or CV should contain changes from country to country. A US or Canadian resume leaves out a photo, date of birth and marital status. A UK or Irish CV usually runs to two pages with a short profile at the top. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland a tabular Lebenslauf often includes a photo, and in the UAE and the Gulf a photo, nationality and visa status are common. Choose where you are applying, and the builder shows the fields that are customary there, sets the paper size (US Letter or A4) and the document name.

The PDF uses a single, clean column with real text, so applicant tracking systems (ATS) can read it. Write each job as two to five short bullet points that start with a verb and include results with numbers where you can.

Your details stay in your browser. To come back later, use "Save draft file": it downloads your entries as a small file that you can open again here. Nothing is stored on a server.

Good to know

  • The PDF font supports Latin characters only, so Arabic or Chinese text cannot be included yet.
  • One clean layout; there are no colour themes yet.
  • Country notes describe common practice, not rules; follow the employer’s instructions when they differ.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a resume and a CV?

In the US and Canada, a resume is a short summary of your experience and a CV is a long academic record. In the UK, Ireland, Europe and the Gulf, "CV" is the everyday word for what Americans call a resume.

Should I put a photo on my CV?

Not in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland or Australia. In Germany, parts of Europe and the Gulf a professional photo is common, though usually optional.

Can applicant tracking systems read this PDF?

Yes. It uses real text in a single column with standard headings, which ATS software reads reliably.
