About this tool

Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100. Customs differ widely. In the US, 15% to 20% is usual at sit-down restaurants, often more for great service. In Canada, 15% to 20% is common too. In the UK, many restaurants add a discretionary service charge of about 12.5%; if they do not, 10% to 15% is typical. In Australia, New Zealand and much of Europe, tipping is optional and smaller. In the UAE, 10% to 15% is common where no service charge is added.

Many people tip on the amount before sales tax. Check whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding a tip.

Good to know

  • Shares are equal; the calculator does not split by what each person ordered.
  • Customs are general guidance and vary by place and service.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip in the US?

At sit-down restaurants, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is usual. 18% on $86.40 is $15.55.

How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On $45, 10% is $4.50, so 20% is $9.

Should I tip if there is a service charge?

Usually not, or only a little extra for outstanding service, because the service charge already goes towards the staff in many places.
