About this tool
The estimate uses the IRS figures for tax year 2026: a standard deduction of $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and federal brackets of 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 and Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000.
Traditional 401(k) contributions come off your pay before federal income tax, but Social Security and Medicare are still charged on them. State income tax varies from none (for example Texas and Florida) to graduated rates over 10%; enter an average rate to include it.
Good to know
- Assumes the standard deduction, no other income, credits or itemized deductions, and a full year at the same pay.
- Head of household and married filing separately are not included.
- State and local income taxes are approximated with one flat rate.
- An estimate of the year’s tax, not of your employer’s exact withholding. Not tax advice.
