About this tool

US sales tax is set by states, counties and cities, so the rate depends on exactly where the sale happens. The calculator shows each state's rate and the average combined state and local rate published by the Tax Foundation for 1 July 2026. For a precise answer, type the rate printed on your receipt or found with your state's lookup tool.

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon (Alaska allows local sales taxes). To remove tax from a total, divide by 1 plus the rate: $108.25 at 8.25% is $100 before tax.

Good to know

  • Rates checked in November 2026; local rates differ within each state, so averages are estimates.
  • Many states exempt or reduce tax on groceries, clothing or medicine.
  • Not tax advice. Businesses should use address-level rates from their state.
